Hair Care TipsQuestion:
How do I care for my hair to help strengthen it and promote
healthy hair growth?
Winter and Summer months can be very hard on textured and
chemically treated hair. To keep your hair looking it's
best, it is very important to always keep it well
conditioned and moisturize at all times. The following tips
should help you get the best out of your hair by using ebene.
Chemically Treated Hair
1) The night before washing your hair, do a "bain
d'huile" (oil treatment) with the Regenerating Hair
Treatment Oil to deep condition and rejuvenate hair. For
extremely dry hair, leave the "bain d'huile"* on for a
couple of days before rinsing out.
1b) If your hair and scalp are both dry, use the Scalp
Therapy instead of the Regenerating Hair Treatment Oil for
the "bain d'huile". * Bain d'huile - oil treatment.
2) Wash hair with Jojoba and Tamanu Shampoo. After
washing hair, follow with Jojoba and Tamanu Conditioning
Rinse.
3) Once dry, work a dime size of Shea Butter Hair and
Scalp Conditioner into hair and style as usual. Use the Shea
Butter Hair and Scalp Conditioner as a hairdress and daily
conditioner to nourish, moisturize and protect hair from
moisture loss caused by heat, sun, chemicals and daily
stress on hair.
Natural Hair
1) The night before washing your hair, do a "bain
d'huile" (oil bath) with the Regenerating Hair Treatment Oil
to deep condition and rejuvenate hair. For extremely dry
hair, leave the "bain d'huile on for a couple of days before
washing out. 1b) If your hair and scalp are both dry, use
the Scalp Therapy instead of the Regenerating Hair Treatment
Oil for the "bain d'huile".
2) Wash Hair with Soapnut hair and Body Cleanser or Shea
Butter or Jojoba shampoo. Follow with the vinegar rinse to
remove build up (rinse well), then do a final rinse with the
Conditioning Herbal Rinse (do not rinse out).
3) After washing hair, work Shea Butter Hair and scalp
Conditioner into damp hair. Braid or twist hair while still
damp. Once dry, style as usual. Use the Shea Butter Hair and
Scalp Conditioner as a hairdress and daily conditioner to
nourish, moisturize and protect hair from moisture loss
caused by heat, sun and daily stress on hair.
Split Ends
To help prevent split ends, I would advise to
do a deep conditioning treatment once a week with our
Shea Butter Regenerating
Hair Treatment Oil, avoid
tugging on hair when detangling by applying a product that
will ease detangling like our Shea Butter Hsir Styling
Lotion, Coconut Hair Milk or Styling
Conditioning and Detangling Spray.
Trim hair two to three
times a year (every 8 to 12 weeks). Protect ends by applying
a conditioning dressing to them before applying heat like
curling or flat ironing or spending the day at the beach
like our Shea Butter Hair and Scalp Conditioner or
Essential Hair
Butter, or
Conditioning Styling Oil Spray at least twice a week.
Shedding and Breaking
To help
with breaking and shedding, first start by
trimming hair two to three
times a year (every 8 to 12 weeks). I recommend the
following for hair that is breaking:
Shea Butter Regenerating
Hair Treatment Oil,
Shea Butter Hair and Scalp Conditioner or
Essential Hair
Butter and the
Conditioning/Strenghtening Herbal Hair Rinse. For
hair that is shedding (coming out from the root), I
recommend the following:
Essential Scalp Serum,
Conditioning/Strenghtening Herbal
Hair Rinse.
Braided Hair or Locs
1)The night before washing your hair, do a "bain d'huile"
(oil bath) with our
Shea Butter Regenerating
Hair Treatment Oil to deep
condition and rejuvenate hair. If you have synthetic braids,
apply the oil to your own hair only. For extremely dry hair,
leave the "bain d'huile on for a couple of days before
washing out.
2) Wash hair with castile soap (dilute 1 cap of soap
with 10 caps of water). Follow with the vinegar rinse to
remove build up (rinse well), then do a final rinse with the
Conditioning Herbal Rinse (do not rinse out).
3) After washing hair, spray
Conditioning Styling Oil
Spray or apply
Shea Butter Regenerating
Hair Treatment Oil onto braids or locs
when hair is still damp, but not wet.
4) Once your hair has dried, to give locs an extra
conditioning boost, melt a little bit of
Soy Lockdressing between your hands and re-twist each
loc.
Toddler and
Children's Hair
Question:
Can I use your products on my toddler's hair?
All of our products can be
used on a toddler's hair with the exception of our shampoos since they are not tear free, and we know how those
little ones can be in the bathtub. We have also added
to our collection a whole range of
hair care products for
kids. Whether your little sports loose
curls, tight curls, kinky wringlets, wavy or coarse hair, we have a product
to help promote hair growth, nourish and strengthen, stop
breakage, condition and help with detangling your little
one's hair. The over all health of your little one's
hair will improve with our children's hair care products.
As always, our products are made with natural and certified
organic ingredients and do not contain any beeswax, petroleum bi-products or
drying alcohols.
Question: How do I care for my toddler's hair?
First, start by throwing away any and every product that you
may have that contains the following: mineral oil,
petroleum or petrolatum, alcohol, any type of sulfates,
sodium borate, and animal bi-products. Products
containing these ingredients will harden your little one's
hair and make it coarse and hard to manage over time.
Below is my suggested regimen, done by my mother and her
mother and now me on my daughter:
- 1) Pre Shampoo
Treatment: I do a treatment in Gabby's hair
once a week by applying some of our
Shea Butter
Regenerating Hair Treatment Oil in her hair overnight.
I usually do this on a Friday night.
- 2) Shampoo
and Cleansing Process: For toddlers and young
children, I do not advise using strong shampoo on their hairs.
I would advise washing their hair with a diluted shampoo
(mix 1 cap of shampoo with 2 caps of distilled water) or conditioner of
your choice making sure that it does not contain too
many chemicals. Commercial conditioners I have
found act like a mild shampoo for kinky, curly, wavy and
coarse hair. You will be pleased with the results.
Do this until the child's hair has matured. Now
that Gabby is eight years old, I still wash her hair
with a conditioner every day and once a week to deep
cleanse, we do the shamppo (I wash her hair with the
Lavender and Tea Tree Aloe
Herbal Hair Wash diluted in half by distilled water)
followed by the vinegar rinse,
which I rinse very well.
- 3) The
styling process: Children with hair like mine, which is tight to loose
corkscrews, should follow the following process:
1. Section hair into 4 sections. Apply the
little princess hair styling lotion from roots to ends
and detangle from tips working your way to the roots.
Section those 4 sections into 2 or 4 sections depending
on child's hair length again. Rub a small amount
of our
Shea Butter Hair and Scalp
Conditioner, Essential Hair
Butter or Gabby's Curly Hair Cream or
Little Princess Hair and Scalp Nourisher and braid,
double twist or make little Bandu Knots (what my
mother would do) and allow hair to dry that way.
This will loosen hair pattern a bit and allow for easier
coming through during the week.
2. If you do not wish to loosen curls and want to
accentuate them, detangle hair in the shower. Do
not towel dry. Squeeze excess water out, and apply
a generous amount of either The
Little Princess Hair
Styling Lotion or Gabby's Curly Hair Cream from roots to
ends and allow to air dry.
Children with looser curls, should follow the
following process:
1. Section into 4 sections. Apply a small amount
of the little
princess hair styling lotion from roots to ends and
detangle. Always start at the ends working your
way to the roots.
Skin Care Tips
Question:
How do I care for dry skin and
eczema prone skin?
My daughter and I both have
eczema and extremely dry skin where the eczema does not
flare up. Keeping our skin moisturized is a must. If you
suffer from dry skin or eczema like Gabrielle and I do, the
following regimen should help. The following information is
not medical advice by any means, just what works for us and
others with the same problem.
Dry Skin Care
1) When bathing or
showering use lukewarm water. Stay away from hot water. Use
all natural soaps to avoid skin irritation. Natural soaps do
not contain sulfate or artificial dyes which may irritate
sensitive skin. At home, Gabby and I alternate between
the Shea Butter Baby Bar, the Vanilla Bean, Lavender and the
Oatmeal and Aloe Bar.
2) Use your hands when
bathing. If you do use a washcloth or a sponge, do not scrub
skin.
3) Pat your skin dry with
your towel. Do not rub dry. Allow your skin should be
slightly damp or misty.
4) Apply Shea Butter or
Kokum Butter Intensive Body Treatment or Pregnancy Butter on
your slightly damp skin. Apply your butter of choice to
slightly damp skin daily paying special attention to elbows,
knees and feet.
5)Use our Shea Butter
Hydrating lotion on your face and our Shea Butter Lip
Moisturizer daily to protect your lips and keep them
kissably soft!
6)Try our Facial Steam
once a month to help unclog pores and maintain a healthy
glow. Rinse face with cool water, and follow with your
moisturizer of choice.
7)Winter and Summer times
can take a toll on your skin as well, so be sure to
moisturize your skin daily during these months and protect
it from the sun by applying a sunscreen with a 15 to 30 SPF.
8)Clothes: Baby's with
sensitive skin - Hand wash baby's clothing in our Aloe Vera
Castile Soap.
Oily Skin Care
Question:
How do I care for my oily skin
with your products?
1) Bathe with a natural
bar of soap that will not strip skin as stripping may
promote more oil production. Try either our Mint. Teat Tree, Rosemary Mint Soaps or Lavender in solid bars or liquid
castile soap.
2)Try our Mango Butter as
a moisturizer . It is not as deep moisturizing as the Shea
Butter. It goes on light and conditions the skin all day.
3)Try our Facial Steam
once every two weeks to open pores and help get rid of
excess oil and dirt. Wash face with the Soapnut Hair and
Body Cleanser, and follow with your moisturizer of choice.
4)Winter and Summer times
can take a toll on your skin as well. Protect it from the
sun by applying an oil free sunscreen with a 15 to 30 SPF.
